New Year’s Resolution: Stress Less

Every semester, I become stressed over how the upcoming semester will be. I worry about whether I will have too much work, if I will be able to understand the material, and if the classes will be too hard in general. None of these concerns can be addressed though until the semester starts, and even then, it is typically not until the second or third week that a good indication can be formed. Therefore, I have decided that this year, I am going to use some stress reduction techniques to stop stressing about the semester both now and once it starts.

Throughout my life, I have come upon some techniques that have been known to help de-stress. Some of them are to:

Talk to someone: Sometimes just talking to someone about your concerns or stresses will take your mind off of it, or give you a solution to how to deal with it until you actually need to worry about it.

Download a calm app: There are many apps that can be found for your phone that have podcasts or sounds that if you listen to them they will calm you down. These tend to be very helpful, especially if these concerns are keeping you up at night.

Take a walk: Walks and exercising are one of the best ways to calm yourself down. Scientifically, it is proven that even a 15 minute walk will lower your stress levels.

Have a cup of tea while you read your favorite book: Taking time to relax is very important to de-stressing, and reading a book will help take your mind off of whatever is bothering you.

Color: You have probably heard all about the new popularity in adult coloring books. Take advantage of this and find a cool coloring book that you can sit down and color when you are trying to de-stress.

Listen to music: Sometimes listening to calming music or even your favorite playlist can change your point of view and de-stress you.

There are so many more ways to de-stress and many of them can be found online. Don’t let stress take over your life this school year. Take the time to use these techniques and give yourself a break from stress.
